What is an aromatic compound?

Aromaticity is a term used to describe a chemical property of certain organic compounds, characterized by certain properties like ....

1. Stability

2. Have delocalised pie-electron cloud

3. Undergo substitution reactions rather than addition reactions

Remember it has nothing to do with aroma-- many aromatic compounds do not have the smell

Criteria for Aromaticity?

1. The molecule must be cyclic.

2. The molecule must be flat.

3. The molecule must be fully conjugated.

4. The molecule must obey Huckel rule : (4n+2) Ï€ electrons
