Clemmensen Reduction

Clemmensen Reduction

The carbonyl group of aldehydes and ketones is reduced to CH2 group on treatment with  zinc amalgam and concentrated hydrochloric acid.
Mechanism:
The mechanism of clemmensen reduction is uncertain. The following reaction pathway involving carbonyl group has been proposed . Transfer of our electrons from zinc metal to one molecule takes place.
